Co-Creating The Beloved Community

Unity Church of the Hills

We are not waiting for The Beloved Community to arrive—we are becoming it.

There are moments in the life of a spiritual community when something deeper begins to stir—when what has been quietly forming within us begins to take shape among us.

That is the moment we are in now.

Through our recent Focusing Forward gathering, we were not simply exchanging ideas or naming preferences. We were listening—together—for what is seeking to emerge as the next expression of Unity Church of the Hills.

What we heard was both simple and profound:

We are here to belong.
We are here to grow.
We are here to serve.

And we are being called to do so more intentionally, more courageously, and more collectively than ever before.

The Invitation to The Beloved Community

Community is not something we find—it is something we create.

In Unity, we understand that The Beloved Community is not an ideal somewhere out there in the future. It is a living, breathing reality that takes shape through our presence, our participation, and our willingness to show up for one another in love.

It is a community where:

  • Each person is seen, valued, and embraced as an expression of the Divine

  • Love is not just spoken, but practiced

  • Differences are not erased, but honored

  • Spiritual growth is not passive, but embodied

  • Service flows naturally from who we are

This is not something leadership and staff can build alone.

It is something we co-create—together.

A Living Symbol on Our Altar

Many expressions. One Presence.

If you look at the community altar we recently created, you will see a powerful visual expression of this truth.

Each element placed upon that altar represents something unique—different materials, symbols, meanings, and intentions. No two are exactly alike. And yet, together, they form something whole, something sacred, something unified.

That altar is more than a collection of objects.

It is a reflection of us.

Each of us brings our own story, our own path, our own gifts. And when we place them in the shared space of community—when we offer them in love—they become part of something greater.

This is what it means to live as The Beloved Community.

Honoring Individuality, Celebrating Unity

We are One—and we are uniquely expressed.

At the heart of Unity teaching is a sacred paradox:

We are One.
And we are individual expressions of that One.

To live into this truth is not to become the same—it is to become fully ourselves, while recognizing the Divine in one another.

It means:

  • Bringing our authentic voices, gifts, and perspectives

  • Making space for others to do the same

  • Moving beyond agreement into deeper understanding

  • Choosing connection, even when it requires compassion and courage

Our individuality is not something to overcome.

It is something to honor.

Because it is through our diversity that Spirit reveals its fullness.

What Will Be Asked of Us

We are not being asked for perfection—we are being asked for presence.

As we step into this next chapter, something will be asked of each of us.

Not all the same thing—but something meaningful.

We will be invited:

  • To engage more deeply in community, not just attend it

  • To take ownership of the spiritual life we are creating together

  • To participate in new and evolving opportunities for connection, growth, and service

  • To remain open—to new ideas, new people, and new possibilities

  • To practice love in real, tangible ways

This is how community becomes real.

This is how transformation takes root.

The Path Forward

In the months ahead, we will begin forming ministry teams centered around the key areas that emerged through our shared discernment.

These teams will:

  • Help shape vision into lived experience

  • Develop goals and action steps

  • Create pathways for connection and contribution

  • Invite broader participation across the community

This is where vision becomes embodied.

This is where each of us has a place to belong and to contribute.

A Community Becoming

The Beloved Community is not something we are waiting for—it is something we are becoming.

What is unfolding at Unity Church of the Hills is not something being imposed from the outside.

It is something already alive within us—now being named, nurtured, and brought into fuller expression.

And it is happening through you.

Through your presence.
Through your willingness.
Through your participation in this shared unfolding.

You are part of this.
You matter in this.
And your presence helps shape what comes next.
