Sacred Elders’ Potluck Oct. 24

Date: Thursday, October 24
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The featured speaker is Betty Kent, former president of the Texas Gourd Society. Betty says, “To touch a gourd is to touch a little bit of history.” The Bible translators called the vine that covered Jonah to be the gourd vine.  “And the Lord God prepared a gourd and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head……so Jonah was exceeding glad for the gourd.” (Jonah 4:6)

Historian, Noah Smith wrote: “In lieu of a canteen, each man carried a Spanish gourd, a curious specimen of the gourd family, having two round bowls, each holding near a quart, connected by a short neck, apparently designed for adjusting a strap about……this was a fantastic military array…” The Chinese proverb reflects the culture’s prosperity belief: “If you give or receive a gourd, with it goes all the best in life:  health, happiness, and other good things.”
